The Practice

A studio working exclusively on the spaces between a home and its boundary.

Quartz & Emerald takes on a small number of residences each year — pools, hardscape, courtyards, and the gardens that thread them together.

We treat the exterior as a single architectural moment, designed with the same intention as the rooms within. The work is the slow kind, with one principal on every project from first walk-through to final reveal.

How We Work

Process

01

Discovery

We begin with a slow walk of the property — slopes, sun paths, sightlines, the mature trees, the way the house meets the ground. We sit with the homeowner and listen for the way they actually use the exterior: where they want to gather, what they want to disappear, what already feels right. By the end, we've named the constraints and the opportunities that will shape every decision to come.

02

Concept

Initial sketches, a curated material palette, and a single guiding idea — presented in distinct directions for the homeowner to choose between. Each option is a complete design language: structural moves, planting strategy, pool form, and the way these speak to the architecture of the house.

03

Refinement

Concept becomes drawing. We resolve every dimension, transition, and material detail directly with the homeowner — coping profiles, hardscape patterns, planting densities, the way a stair meets a terrace. Nothing is left for a contractor to interpret.

04

Construction

We coordinate directly with the trades — masons, pool builders, irrigation, lighting, planting crews — protecting the design from drawing through to finished build. Weekly site visits, daily decisions where they're needed.

05

Reveal

The space is handed back to the homeowner. We document it carefully — for them, for our portfolio, and for the next conversation. A reveal is the only moment in the process when we're not making decisions; we're standing back and letting the work be what it became.

We take on a small number of residences each year. If you're considering an exterior project — pool, hardscape, landscape, or all three — we'd like to hear about it.
